New Terminator Series In March

November 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Press release below about a new Terminator series from Dark Horse coming in 2010.

ZACK WHEDON BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO TERMINATOR

DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES CREATIVE TEAM ON HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW SERIES

In 2029, Kyle Reese will be sent to 1984 to stop a T-800 from killing the mother of the resistance, Sarah Conner.  But before his future son will send him back in time, Kyle Reese was simply another survivor in a desolate future.

In a brand-new series, Zack Whedon (Dr. HorribleDeadwoodFringeRubicon) brings his sharp writing skills to one of the most celebrated sci-fi properties in history to tell the story of a man struggling to live in a world with little food, water, or hope.

Never before has the iconic character from James Cameron’s first Terminator film been explored with such depth and humanity.  Readers will have the opportunity to follow Kyle Reese and his closest allies as they face insurmountable odds in a world run by cold, calculating machines bent on destroying the last memory of what it means to be a human being.

In a world wrought with Hunter Killer Drones, T-600s, T-800s, H-K’s and a host of other terrifying technology, a small band of friends must find a way to keep the Resistance breathing amidst an eviscerated landscape devoid of nearly all life.  Kyle Reese, the father of the future, leads these rebels with only the slightest promise of peace and the most basic of mortal codes – never give up.

The two, three-issue arcs will be drawn by Andy MacDonald (NYC MechPunisher War Journal) with covers by renowned illustrator Massimo Carnevale (Y: The Last Man).

“It’s an honor to be a part of the on-going Terminator saga, and to have the talents of Andy MacDonald and Massimo Carnevale helping me in bringing this story to life,” said writer Zack Whedon.

The much-anticipated first issue from the dynamic creative team will be released from Dark Horse Comics in March 2010.

Dark Horse’s successful Termintor Omnibus Vol. 1 & 2 are currently available at a retail price of $24.95.

Also in January: Shadows and Flames

November 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Also being published in late January (besides the awesome Arcana #1 magazine) is The Darkness: Shadows & Flames one-shot. Top Cow’s press release below.

A TALE OF DARKNESS!

THE DARKNESS: SHADOWS & FLAMES ONE SHOT

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that The Darkness: Shadows & Flames one-shot comic book will hit comic book store shelves late January 2010.

Written by up-and-coming scribe Rob Levin (The Darkness: Butcher) and featuring art and cover from Jorge Lucas (The DarknessSunset), the 32-page The Darkness: Shadows & Flames standalone takes readers back to the turn of the 20thCentury to follow a horrifying tale of lost love and the depravity of man and powers beyond our understanding in the tradition of H.P. Lovecraft.  Salvador Gomes is a broken man. He has lost his beautiful wife and young daughter in a fire and now spends restless days and sleepless nights looking for solace.  In desperation, he makes a bargain with “The Shadow God,” but every bargain has its price.

“I’ve always been fascinated with the types of different stories you can tell within the greater mythos of The Darkness,” said Levin.  “Readers are familiar with Jackie starring in horror-centric stories, but ‘Shadows and Flame’ gave Jorge and I a chance to tell another kind of horrific yawn, drawing on the great H.P. Lovecraft and examining man’s own ineptitude in a world in which greater, more powerful creatures exist.”

The Darkness: Shadows & Flames one-shot will retail at $2.99.

Also In January: Strange Girl

November 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

If you only listened to me (which I don’t recommend) you’d think that the only comic-y thing coming out in January is the delightful first issue of the Arcana magazine. However, like every month, there’s things of beauty and joy on offer at the LCS (local comic shop). So,welcome to the first in an occasional feature putting the spotlight on other January releasing treasures. First up – a special collection of one of writer Rick Remender’s early series; Strange Girl. Remender has been making a name for himself lately with his simply awesome Punisher series for Marvel, and his upcoming Last Days of American Crime for Radical looks to be as equally awesome. Now, see him at his earliest and perhaps, finest with Image’s Strange Girl collection which gathers all the original 4 volumes. Press release below.

RICK REMENDER’S COMPLETE STRANGE GIRL GETS COLLECTED THIS JANUARY!

Rick Remender’s complete post-apocalyptic epic, STRANGE GIRL, is collected in a limited edition slipcase this January!

Strange Girl

Before PUNISHER and DOCTOR VOODOO, Rick Remender made his name writing the post-apocalyptic series STRANGE GIRL, which will be collected in its entirety this January as a limited edition slipcase collection.

“STRANGE GIRL is easily one of my most personal works and I’ve long hoped for a complete collection,” Remender said. “Even more important to me is seeing illustrators Eric Nguyen, Jerome Opeña, Nick Stakal and Peter Bergting getting their beautiful work collected in such an edition. STRANGE GIRL was an important book for all of us and I’m happy to have readers get their first chance to experience the entire story in one collection.”

STRANGE GIRL begins ten years after the Rapture, when a beautiful occultist and her pet demon embark on a road trip to the last open gateway to heaven, in hopes of befriending God and escaping hell on earth. A bare-knuckle, action-driven series, peppered with social commentary and dark humor, STRANGE GIRL is a story about the bewildering nature of religion, what would happen if the dark future predicted by many came true, and what a good person would endure for not having faith in advance of it.

The STRANGE GIRL LIMITED EDITION SLIPCASE COLLECTION contains all four volumes of the critically acclaimed series in an exclusive new slipcase along with a Strange Girl print by legendary illustrator Michael Kaluta, all signed by series creator Rick Remender and limited to 1000 editions.

Big Fan and Ratatouille star Patton Oswalt commented, “STRANGE GIRL is exactly that. Strange, plus she’s a girl. But it’s so much more. Redemption, demons, magic spells, hopelessness, friendship and belly-shirts. Rick Remender takes a loving, nostalgic look at the coming apocalypse.”

STRANGE GIRL LIMITED EDITION SLIPCASE COLLECTION, a four-volume signed slipcase strictly limited to 1000 editions for $49.99, will be in-stores January 13th, 2010.

Gestalt’s Digested

Now available from Gestalt Publishing are the first two issues of creator Bobby N’s Digested series. Bobby’s work was the highlight for me (and many others) in Gestalt’s recent Flinch anthology, so to see the writer/artist be the focus of these slice of life pages is sure to be a treat. Arcana Mag Press Release

November 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The press release for the mag was sent off yesterday. Now, it’s really official! Here it is.

arcana_banner

Arcana Launches Comics & Pop Culture Magazine

VANCOUVER (November 5, 2009) – Arcana Studios, an award winning comic book publisher and transmedia producer, is proud to announce the launch of Arcana Magazine. Debuting on January 27th 2010, and solicited in the current November Previews (Diamond Code: NOV09 0599) is the new quarterly magazine simply entitled Arcana, the re-designed print version of the on-line comics based magazine Extra Sequential.

Extra Sequential was the brainchild of Kris Bather and Dave Lapsley in Perth, Western Austrailia – two men who were looking for creative opportunities outside of their day jobs at a large architectural design firm. From January to June of this year 3 issues of Extra Sequential were published, containing interviews with an array of creative professionals, such as Joe Jusko, Zeb Wells, Tom DeFalco, and Brian Cronin. Topics covered included Street Fighter, Flash Gordon, the new Hulk and so much more, with an eye on both mainstream and rising indie stars.

After reaching over 16,000 subscribers on Scribd.com and becoming a Featured Magazine on Issuu.com, Extra Sequential was picked up by Arcana Comics for the transition to print, with Bather and Lapsley continuing their unique comics focus in the new print format.

Bather is the former Comics Department Head of now defunct website Infuze and current contributor to popular website Broken Frontier. Lapsley is new to the world of comics but brings a keen sense of design and shares Bather’s desire to let the world know how cool comics truly are.

“The thing that has always seemed odd to me is that comics continually reveal diverse art from some of the world’s greatest artists, but few people outside of the local comic book shop will ever know that,” says Bather. “Sure, a multitude of people are more familiar with Spider-Man and Batman thanks to Hollywood, but that seems to rarely translate to an increase in regular readership of comics. We hope Arcana can be somewhat of a bridge for those readers as well as show something new to longtime lovers of sequential art.”

Inspired more by the surf and skate magazines than the usual pop culture assortment on the shelves, Arcana aims to let the art speak for itself while also making sure every page is an artistic display. With bold layouts incorporating unique design and photography Arcana aims to be more than a throwaway item, but an attractive glimpse into the cutting edge of comic books and the people behind them.

Bather states, “We chose the landscape format straight out of the gate because we want people to know that we’re different upon first glance. We realise it’s perhaps a risky choice, but that’s exactly what comics are too. We want to conjure curiousity in comics newbies, but there’s enough content in Arcana for the veteran reader too.”

The first issue of Arcana features interviews with Star Wars: Invasion writer Tom Taylor, artist Josh Medors, Singaporean writer Edmund Shern, Surrogates creator Robert Venditti, and ground breaking artist David Mack. Also included are previews from upcoming comics and features such as a look back at The Death of Superman event, a talk with pro cyclist/comics fan Dave Zabriskie, a brief chat with the legendary Marv Wolfman, and an article on the current love affair between musicians and comics, including an interview with Coheed & Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez. There’s also a look at just how to market comics today, a breakdown of popular comic book terms and more.

Arcana #1, a 96 page full color magazine goes on sale January 27th, 2010.

About Arcana Studios:

Arcana Comics has published over 150 original comics and books and is a division of Arcana, an award winning transmedia company founded by CEO Sean O’Reilly. Arcana establishes new brands and intellectual properties with engaging storytelling and compelling visuals through comic books, graphic novels, animation, short-form live-action, video games, toys and now, feature length films. Arcana has created original brands they control such as The Clockwork Girl and Kade, and have further developed existing brands for Disney, Sony, Capcom, HBO and more. In addition, several of Arcana’ s other properties are in development or pre-production such as GEARHEAD with Valhalla Motion Pictures and a mixed martial arts movie through Grindstone Entertainment.
