Daken, Wolverine’s son seems intent on causing just as much havoc as his Dad. Here’s what Marvel say about Dark Wolverine #80, which arrives on November 25, plus text-free pages and the two covers by Greg Land and Stefano Caselli.
Daken Gets His Revenge in Dark Wolverine #80!
Ok, so being a hero isn’t as easy as it looks, but mercilessly slaughtering people is something that will come all too naturally to Daken, son of Wolverine, in Dark Wolverine #80! Red-hot scribes Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu join rising star artist Stephen Segovia to deliver the last thrilling issue of this chapter in Wolverine’s son’s life! Norman Osborn’s publicity stunt fails miserably and Daken is more than happy to clean up the mess – by creating an even bloodier one! How does Daken pay back the upstart villains that beat him to within an inch of his life? He’s gonna teach ‘em that their egos just wrote cheques their bodies can’t cash! Be sure to catch the stunning variant cover by Young Guns artist Stefano Caselli!
Everyone is raving about Way and Liu’s Dark Wolverine:
“[Daken] is an interesting character. He’s manipulative, sarcastic, poetic, and has the strength of his father. Way’s dialogue is very enticing.” – Ryan Goulet, Comicsbulletin.com
“Way and Liu develop a wonderful satirical attitude for Daken that enhances the quality of this character.” – Frank Stapleton, BrokenFrontier.com
“Of all the Dark Reign storylines at the moment, Dark Wolverine is the one I am enjoying the most.” – Antony Ellis, thecomicaddiction.com

In our first issue (arriving in January) we have an interview with writers John Reppion and Leah Moore. They’ve carved out a sophisticated niche for themselves as of late with their work for Dynamite Entertainment on series such as The Complete Dracula and Sherlock Holmes. Next is The Complete Alice in Wonderland. Tying in to the theme is this dazzling 2010 calendar based on the famous work of Lewis Carroll, by designer John Coulthart. Inspired by the psychedelic sixties, the calendar can be purchased here and more of it can be seen at Coulthart’s site. Apparently he also has something in the works with Alan Moore. Cool.

I’m glad this series is back along with the rest of Archaia’s unique books, after the publisher was away for too long. Titanium Rain is a well written, and realistically rendered near future military story and this week the first two issues launched as great primer on the series. A preview is below, and here’s what Archaia say about the series.
TITANIUM RAIN DOUBLE-SIZED ISSUE RELAUNCH #1-2
(W/A) Josh Finney and Kat RochaTo be alive is to be at odds with the world. Man against nature. Man against man. The instinct to survive is what has made us who we are. In the year 2031, mankind’s survival instinct is put to the test when a civil war in China spirals into global conflict. Nations are destroyed. Millions are killed. And for many like US Air Force pilot Alec Killian, survival will mean shedding some of his humanity in exchange for biotech and machine. In the spirit of books and films such as Ghost in the Shell, Innocence and Blackhawk Down, Titanium Rain follows one pilot’s journey through mankind’s worst, only to discover its best. This special double-sized issue combines the previously released debut issue with the all-new issue #2.

I just watched An American Werewolf in London recently – John Landis’ 1981 horror/comedy classic. The Academy Awards committee were so impressed by that film’s make-up effects that they created a new Oscar category for it. On to related matters…
This remake of the 1941 film of the same name is due for release on February 12. Set in the 1800s Anthony Hopkins plays a mad old fella who reconnects with his son (huge fan of the original, Benicio del Toro). The werewolf curse then shows its hairy face. The new trailer has just been released and it looks far superior to the 1994 Jack Nicholson led film, Wolf. The Wolfman is directed by Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III, 2011’s The First Avenger: Captain America).

Indie publisher Com.x made a splash with their series Cla$$war in 2003 but haven’t done much since. However, their new project, entitled 45 looks set to be another winner. In the current Previews catalogue, and set for a December release the book seems like one of those, “why has no-one thought of this before?” ideas. Com.x can describe it better than me, so here goes…
What makes “45” unique is that each page of art has been illustrated by a different artist, with no predetermined brief given; just the written page as guidance. It truly is an original attempt at redefining what people expect from a comic book format. Featuring the art of Liam Sharp, Jock, Sean Philips, Randy Green, Charlie Adlard and Dan Brereton, to name but a few of the 45 contributors. The story is a series of interconnected interviews documented by the fictional James Stanley. As a soon-to-be father, James wants to find out what lies in store for his family if his unborn child turns out to have a Superpower.
The dedicated blog has more info on the 132 pager. It seems like a fresh spin on the spandex genre and a great entry point for the superhero-curious.

Press release below detailing publisher Top Cow’s latest entry in their Pilot Season series of one-shots.
ROBERT KIRKMAN AND MARC SILVESTRI KILL FOR GOOD
PILOT SEASON: MURDERER #1
Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that Pilot Season 2009 will kick of with Pilot Season: Murderer #1. Due to arrive in comic books stores across the country on November 18, 2009, Pilot Season: Murderer #1 is 32 pages of moral torment in a character study spuriously conjured from the minds of Image Comics partners Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) and Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri (X-Men/Dark Avengers: Utopia, The Darkness).
Kirkman writes the story of Jason Sparks, a man cursed to spend every waking moment being bombarded by the thoughts of strangers around him. Every dirty little secret and every hidden desire screams out at him in a cacophony of voices in his head. The only way to silent these voices, the only thing that buys Jason a moment of respite… is murder. Up and coming artist Nelson Blake II (The Darkness, Broken Trinity: Witchblade) performs the artistic duties to flesh out the story of a man trying to use his powers for good. Pilot Season: Murderer #1 features a cover by co-creator Marc Silvestri and colorist Sunny Gho of IFS.
Pilot Season: Murderer #1 is priced at $2.99 as part of Top Cow’s ongoing initiative to maintain their price point at $2.99 throughout 2009 for all of their regular comic books. It is the first of five new concepts created by Kirkman and Silvestri especially forPilot Season 2009.
Pilot Season has been an annual Top Cow tradition since 2007 that give fans the power to choose the next two Top Cow series based on a selection of one-shot Pilot Season“pilot” issues through online voting. The inaugural Pilot Season initiative garnered more than four million votes from fans across the globe.

Opening this week is the latest film from British director Terry Gilliam. It’s also Heath Ledger’s last. Gilliam may not always make hugely popular films, but as evidenced by Brazil, 12 Monkeys and Time Bandits, they always look grand.
